Amazon.com — Tester (SDET-II)

Title:Tester (SDET-II)
Type:Job
Brief Description:NLP and ML more generally for matching products, test
Company:Amazon.com
Location:Seattle, WA, USA
Posted On:Oct 30, 2010
Application Deadline:
More Information:https://us-amazon.icims.com/jobs/123358/job
Notes:
From Greg Hullender, hiring manager:

My group is responsible for "Matching," which means we match offers
from
merchants with existing entries in Amazon's catalog. This is a
natural-language/machine-learning problem where the features include things
like the name of the product (which can vary), the item description, the
product code (sometimes omitted or incorrect), the merchant's history, etc.
We're looking for people to code algorithms, write programs to collect
labeled training data (probably using Mechanical Turk), and test the
results.

There are actually two of these positions open. Here's the other link:
https://us-amazon.icims.com/jobs/115956/job

Candidates for these positions still need to be able to program, but the bar for
writing code for testing is much lower than the bar for writing production code.
Testing requires a particular mindset--someone creative at finding edge
cases--so it's not quite true that a testing job is a step to a "real"
programming job; testing is a career in itself.
