More Information:
MATLAB coding project
The UW Phonetics Lab is hiring a contractor to build a backend and GUI
for setup, execution, and scoring of perception experiments. The
software must run under MATLAB r2010a for MacOS 10.6.x with
PsychToolbox (ideally should also run under Windows versions of MATLAB
and Linux/Octave). Detailed requirements:

A GUI for users to:
- select stimulus type (audio, image, text, and combinations of these)
- select various randomization schemes (will be specified)
- select audio playout options (L/R/Stereo)
- select experimental design (X, AX, or ABX design)
- specify parameters for mixing noise with audio stimuli
- choose a user response method (button box, keyboard, mouse click, or
audio recording)
- set stimulus timing and repetition parameters
- load text files containing instructions for the subject, and display
them at runtime
- load stimuli and a correlation file (a tab-delimited file specifying
correlations among stimulus types & forced-choice response options)
- review finished experiments that involved recorded subject
responses, and score the subject responses by keyword

A backend to support the GUI, including:
- reading in audio files (WAV)
- reading in images (PNG/JPG)
- reading in tab-delimited text files
- creation of speech-shaped noise spectra and on-the-fly mixing of
stimuli with noise at various SNRs (signal-to-noise ratios)
- preloading all stimuli for consistent playback
- playout/display of stimuli and response choices
- opening buffers to record subject audio responses
- recording all experimental parameters, stimulus presentation
details, subject responses, and response scorings, and writing to file

The GUI and backend should ideally be extensible to eventually include
video stimuli, as well as a training function for stimuli that are
machine-scored on-the-fly. The button box is an ioLabs eight-button
response box with onboard timestamping
(http://www.iolab.co.uk/index.html). Code should utilize PsychToolbox
routines for stimulus display and response timing tasks. A
screen-by-screen plan for the GUI is already developed; this will be
discussed at startup meeting. Code structured as separate .m function
files is preferred. Good variable/function naming practices and
thorough code commenting are expected. Partial code already exists
for about 20% of this task, and that code will be made available if
desired (though it may prove easier to mostly start from scratch, as
the initial codebase was built with only a subset of the above
constraints and goals in mind).

Compensation for the project is $2500. The project should be
completed as soon as possible, ideally no later than June 15. If not
already done so, the contractor must register as a UW vendor (this is
a free and relatively painless process, and we can offer some guidance
here). If you are interested, contact Dan McCloy (drmccloy@uw.edu),
subject line \"MATLAB project,\" and include a brief description of your
qualifications and any questions you have about the project.
