Software Engineer / Researcher – Applications of Semantic Analysis
Eduworks Corporation (www.eduworks.com) is a small business that engages
in research and develops solutions that apply semantic analysis to areas
related to learning, education, training and knowledge management. Our
commercial customers range from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies
in Aviation, Energy, Health, Technology and other sectors. Our research
program is funded by contracts from federal agencies such as the National
Science Foundation, Advanced Distributed Learning initiative, and the Army
Research Lab.
We are looking for someone who can research, develop and code
computational linguistics algorithms and develop cloud-based applications
that use them. Most of our team works on one main project and one
secondary project. Based on interest, we have several projects that can be
shuffled, but the two most likely projects are a Small Business Innovative
Research project in the area of Intelligent Tutoring Systems and a
commercial project that involves analyzing qualifications and training
records.
All of our work has strong research and creative components, but at the
end of the day we are creating robust, scalable, commercially deployable
software. As a result, we are looking for someone who is a top tier
software engineer and sees computational linguistics as means to an end
rather than someone who wants to make a career of computational
linguistics research. We also often work in a distributed environment and
with other companies and organizations, so the cliché “strong
communication skills, ability to work in a team setting, and ability to
work independently” are real requirements for us.
In terms of computer languages, most of our back-end code is written in
Java. You would be expected to become expert in Java if you are not
already, but we are fine with integrating libraries written in other
languages (e.g. C#, Ruby, Python). You also need to be very good at web
application development in JavaScript, HTML5, etc. We use both SQL and
No-SQL databases.
Location is itself not a huge issue, although given the choice we would
prefer someone in Oregon. We have a good benefit package and we try to
have fun with our work.
